W 1.2085: Sulfur prehardened (300HB) and corrosion resistant die steel

W 1.2085 is a 16% Cr die steel with improved corrosion resistance properties thanks to the addition of chromium. The specific sulfur in our product improves the machinability response of the moulds.

Delivered in the quenched and tempered condition, the product has a completely bainite-special alloy-iron carbide and ferrite mixture martensite microstructure and typical hardness of 320 HB. This die steel is not designed for highly polished or etched surfaces.

This steel is used for a wide range of die steel applications, including holders or backing plates, which are often wet-worked.

The size is also suitable for the manufacture of abrasive materials such as PVC.

HEAT TREATMENT (MOLD TREATMENT) PROPERTIES

Tempering:
W 1.2085 steel is delivered tempered and quenched to a hardness range of 280/325. Therefore, subsequent heat treatment is not required.

Hardening:
For applications requiring higher mechanical properties, Hardening can be done as follows.
> heating between 985 and 1020 °C (1805 -1868 °F) with sufficient quenching time (V 1 hour/inch)
> oil or air cooling depending on thickness.
While the tempering temperature depends on the desired specifications, in general, the following applications should be considered:
> homogeneous and equal heating according to the selected temperature
> one hour per inch based on total thickness
wetting
> double annealing with cooling to room temperature
